Of Demons and Pixies

Often near the opposite ends of the fantasy scale, those two. Dark and light, decadence and innocence, indulging in selfish desires and whims in contrast with selfless wish to aid other beings. That is the classic fantasy scale on which we place human personality traits and wrap them in creatures easier for us to comprehend and understand.

Both forms of fantasy are very popular. In fact, fantasy itself is the default shape of being for a great part of the grid. For those who have never spent a moment in a human coloured skin and for those curious to try on a pair of wings, Genre focuses on fantasy this month. The event just started and will run until February 12th.

Both Pixie and Demon outfits by Fallen Gods Inc. are available in Genre and include outfits for both normal sized avatars and petites for both genders. Both looks come with wings, I just preferred this particular demon with more room for hairstyle. Speaking of which, it’s by Analog Dog and also for sale in Genre. The Sense of Story

There’s something within us that feels the need to perceive beginnings and endings: we divide our lives into series of events, try to pinpoint when they began and why, name when they ended and how. It appeals to our sense of story, I guess. We see lives as stories, whether they are ours or others. Thus the beginning of a new year tends to feel like opening the first page of a new storybook, full of possibilities and potential. We take a moment to look back to evaluate and even judge how the previous storybook worked out: did it go as we planned, did it bring us joy and satisfaction, did it make us cry, was it full of tedium and unnecessary details, what could be done to make it better? That is where and when the resolutions arrive: this year, this story will be better. No more same mistakes, less dull repetition, more laughter, more love, more meaning, more moments to cherish and remember. Then we blink and suddenly it’s year later and the time to turn the last page again. No matter whether we manage to keep our resolutions, no matter what the story will become, today is the day to feel hope and celebrate the story still continuing. We are all writing our own sequels: let’s make them good ones!

Madame Guillotine

Only because “Their heads? Off with them.” felt slightly too long a title. Besides, Madame Guillotine is a perfect character to spawn from the current Twisted Hunt. She could easily be some sort of a spirit of the machine in a supernatural horror movie, hovering about and grinning as the blade keeps coming down, the last thing you’ll ever see.

The guillotine is by Culprit. It’s macabre, perfectly functional and morbidly hilarious at the same time with its leg twitching and kangaroo head in the bucket. The surroundings are the Church of Starry Wisdom by Souzou Eien, showing what happens to the heads afterwards: into the starry abyss gate of monsters!

The red vinyl dress by Sassy!, mesh eyes by -{The Attic}-, skin by Style by Kira and the chess board facial tattoo by Reila Skins are also from the hunt, but I did add a red lipstick by Izzie’s and blood tattoo layer by The Plastik to the mix. Boots, hair and poses are also not from the hunt.

Nephilim, Take Two

Nomine has released the male versions of the Nephilim skin line! Blogging male skins was obviously somewhat a challenge, so after I had made a male shape and had some shirtless fun, I photoshopped Sonya in to hold his hand. Sort of.

These are the skins for all the creatures of the night, whether you’re alive or something less so or just prefer the pale, more eccentric look. More info, makeup, beard and scar options can be found here. Demos can obviously be found in Nomine, so slink over and give them a go!

Summer Sailing

I was tempted to call this post Sailor Cute, but I actually never watched Sailor Moon so my ability to make connections would have ended at the names. Regardless, this bikini by katat0nik is seriously the cutest sailor outfit ever while also being the most standout bikini of this summer. So much love.

My magical familiar companion is played by my meepet Lumi, modelling various funny Hair Fair gifts. The colour-change-scripted sailor hair is by Tameless, also a fair gift. Hair Fair is one of the best events for freebie-hunters, almost every booth has gifts to spoil us. My favourites tend to be the silly ones, it’s like a mini Crazy Hair Hunt.

The shed is a freebie by L2 Studio from the hunt at The Gallery Gift Shop. The decor is a mix from those hunt loots, the temporary closing sale at Concrete Flowers and this delicious drink by Poche from Okinawa Summer Festival.

I think in the end Sailor Cute decided that magical familiars do not need wigs to perform their sidekick duties, but I’d like to remind you that children do. Hair Fair is of course about several sims worth of new hair releases and gifts, but it is also about Wigs for Kids. By now the lag should have calmed down on the sims, so go buy all the things!

Steam for Five Hundred

There’s another 500L Avatar Challenge going on and they are always so much fun that I had to poke at it. The idea is to make a new avatar under 500L, everything used must be available and accessible now, so you cannot use old hunt prizes and such. The last time I made a sorceress, a goth and a rocker, so this time I focused on steampunk. I like doing something out of the norm casuals for these challenges, because roleplayers need shopping guides, too! The clothes and goggles took most of the budget, but they were so worth it. The pants and the jacket can be found in League’s discount area upstairs and the goggles are by Grim Bros., because you can’t talk about SL steampunk and not mention them. The jewelry by KOSH was just 2L altogether (from their discount basement) and the hair (Exile), shoes (lassitude & ennui) and the lipstick (M.O.C.K. Cosmetics) are freebies. The skin is a group gift by bilo (50L to join the group) and I used it for both characters. The other girl being a more doll-styled gaslight romance heroine. The dress is an old Steam Hunt gift by Orquidea, but fortunately it’s for sale in the shop and thus still available. I love all their hunt gifts, it’s a delightful store. The cutesy ribboned pigtails are a group gift by Lo*momo (group free to join) and I got tattoo lashes by *BOOM* for 25L to add to the skin’s makeup. Eyes are from KOSH’s discount room, just 1L. Speaking of lassitude & ennui, there’s plenty of wonderful footware perfect for steampunk when you’re not trying to build a whole avatar with 500L. These Miss Dandy shoes were very affordable on the Marketplace, though, so both my girls wear Jackal’s things! The stockings are a freebie by *Sheer*. I picked the poses from my regular HUDs, so no guarantees about their prices. The location is of course New Babbage, an excellent stop for a newbie steam personage.

Nephilim

Often cast into the role of fallen angels or demons, the older interpretations of nephilim actually refer to them as the children of angels and mortal women, possibly giants. These days the word is fair game for any fantasy setting that needs a fancier word for their demons than well, demons. It is also the name of the latest skin line by Nomine. I should say final normal line, since Munchflower has stated that after this (and the upcoming similar men’s line) it will be fantasy skins, clothing and accessories all the way!

Nephilim is designed for all the pale daughters of the night, ranging from pure white to very light human skin tone. No, there’s nothing wrong with your eyes, I did make a patchwork picture. All the separated parts have a different skintone, the darkest in the bottom right corner, the palest one at the top.

The various skins come with a nude skin version as well, in case you want to play with other makeups. There’s also tattoo layers for more and less cleavage, but I didn’t use either in these. You can see more makeup options here or by simply going to Nomine and trying on all the demos!

See, this is what happens when you force nocturnal beings into the — hiss — sunlight! They wilt until sundown, at which point they will be furious. Don’t make the same mistake! I took the bullet just to show a couple of the skins in a clearer light. The closeups are the two darkest tones in an evening light, the last picture is the two paler ones in daylight and the most white one — the face of the patchwork picture — is taken comfortably in the night. Just like they should be.

52 Colours: Rust

Miss Rust was originally meant to be a rusting robot of some sort, but since the colour is actually all perky near-orange instead of a darker rustier tone, I went with something cuter and just explored a slightly darker sim.

The sim is A Rusted Development and it’s both breathtaking and intriguing to explore. There’s surprises and walkways and hidden areas all around.

Miss Rust is accompanied by her pet urpy, one of the creatures by Booshies. This one is so friendly that it likes to curl around your shoulders and mimic a stole. Perfect solution: pet and fashion!

The lament for lack of robotics aside, the vibe of slight insanity accompanied by nostalgic tones of decaying machinery cityscape fit the character perfectly. Who knows why she dances, but dance she will~

Up to No Good

The undead fey have appeared to accompany their bigger cousins in the Zombie Popcorn Carnival. These petites hail from the island of Selidor, more commonly known as the home of Fallen Gods Inc., but for the duration of the Carnival they are pestering people only there. When the carnival ends, they will grow bored and slink back home to the temple in Selidor.

There was a lot to do at the carnival, sand castles to conquer, big people to glare, souls to steal, earlobes to nom… what? Brains are too big for them! The hair is a new release by Wasabi Pills; this particular colour was available in the 50L Fridays, but the less candied tones are for sale normally. I had to mention it for three reasons: 1) they don’t rig their short styles, so it was easy to shrink to petite size 2) it’s adorable 3) 50L Fridays are back, hurray!

The spectacles by Contraption are also available in the Carnival, and they are fabulously unhinged. They are also modifiable and shrunk beautifully to petite size. Yes, one of the glasses is missing. Yes, they make her look like a pocket-size evil librarian genius. Perfect!

So when you go to the Carnival, make sure you don’t leave your noms on the table or your pet hamsters unguarded, you never know who might be glaring at you from the shadows!

Oopskate

Just when you thought you had participated in the most eccentric parties on the grid, along comes Oopskate! It’s a roller skating birthday party for Bronxelf’s RL cat, who might not know how to skate, but is gracious enough to offer all the proceeds to charity. Every year they pick another one and this year it is the American Porphyria Association.

To be specific, this is a goth/industrial/ebm roller skating party. It begins 10 PM SLT, Bronxelf will be DJing as is good and proper as the birthday kitty’s caretaker and the contest theme is Best in Orange/Purple. Either/or/both. The sponsoring shops have donated gift cards for the contest and have also party exclusive items for sale, the proceeds going to the charity. The shop list and more details can be found here.

I took the pictures well before anything was for sale, so it’s just fun with the theme colours for me. I knew that it was a good idea to buy that latex outfit from Sn@tch! My skates are an old hunt prize by +DV8+, but there’s free roller skates available in the party if you don’t own any.
