It is the night of colours breaking through the darkness. The night when even the Abyss glows. The night when the Lost, the Exiled, the Banished can find their way again.

They have waited, oh, how they have waited. Each night a thousand more, wrapped in the dark, their sense of self eroding until they are one with the Abyss, one dark being forever waiting. Until the Night arrives, until the glow separates them once more, gifts them separation, an identity. Shows them the way out.

The Between is Breached

“Tell me, minions mine, what news from the Border, what word from the Threshold, what whispers from the Between?”

Calling the Celebrants

We have been invited. Every year the invitation arrives, every year the curtains are drawn aside to reveal doorways, every year the Sound of Life rings in our silenced ears once more. It calls, it beckons, it pleads. Just like it always did. Just like it always does.

Each of us celebrates the return to the Land We Once Walked On. Some of us simply step through, others sail in with more impressive means, some slink and slither, some arrive with a bang. Some run through the streets screaming, some hiss softly in the passing October breeze.

It does not matter how we celebrate, what matters is that we all do. For one night, one glorious night a year, all the chains are broken and we are free. Free, and dancing amongst you.

Unlikely Eve

“If you consent, neither you nor any other human being shall ever see us again; I will go to the vast wilds of South America. My food is not that of man; I do not destroy the lamb and the kid to glut my appetite; acorns and berries afford me sufficient nourishment. My companion will be of the same nature as myself and will be content with the same fare. We shall make our bed of dried leaves; the sun will shine on us as on man and will ripen our food. The neverborn mate of the creature, the culmination of his plan to make peace with mankind, the symbol of hope and happiness that companionship brings to the lonely. What if she was not destroyed half-formed, what if Frankenstein kept his word and let his creature escape the civilization with his newborn mate into the warmer wilds than Europe can offer?

She would know nothing of the humans except the horror stories her mate bestows upon her to warn her away. To her eyes neither of them look monstrous for she’d have nothing to compare to nor any shocked reactions to prove such judgments correct. How long would she stay innocent, this unlikely Eve of crafted dead flesh brought to life again?

Perhaps it would all work out like the creature dreamed, perhaps they could have been happily lost in their own paradise. Unless, of course, one day her matured curiosity lured her out of the jungle and into the light…

A Tattered Page is a new in-store event that draws its inspiration from books. The first round focuses on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and you can find the shopping guide from the website. They Wait

They wait. Between the worlds, in the space of silently slithering thoughts and ancient memories they bide their time. Their time never runs out, nor their patience.

The realms shift, aeons pass, shadows slide in like the tide. They embrace the oldest of mysteries, the best-kept secrets: embrace and absorb before they retreat.

The shadows breathe the secrets into the night air, into flickers at the corner of your eye, into the certainty of someone watching. They dance with every dark story you’ve ever heard, whisper so low that your ears cannot hear, so low that you feel it at the base of your spine: it is all true.

They wait. The worlds turn, years vanish like blinks of an ancient eye. Enticed imaginations reach for them, feel them, fear them: feed them.  

Every primal fear of the dark, every gasp of a frozen prey, every moment of fierce denial of the truth we feel curling around our throats like the slow dance of the python, every held breath of the child within hiding in a corner knows the truth older than our small world: it is true.

They are true. They exist. They wait. There are moments within the world-turns when the doors open, the barriers vanish, the realms merge. Moments that arrive exactly when we wait for them the most.

What If?

It is the night for dark secrets, mysteries and myths. It is time for imagination to dwell in all the frightful spots at the back of your head, indulge in the startles, channel your mundane concerns into the fear of unknown and improbable, with that faint little voice within asking ‘what if?’ 

It is time for delicious treats, delicious thoughts. Make your fears tangible, taste them on the tip of your tongue, reach for more, find ways to combat them by becoming one yourself.

Take comfort in the knowledge that soon the visitation will be over and everything will be back to safe normalcy: all the monsters will be back under your bed or in your closet, haunting you only in the moments of your weakness.

But for now, tonight: dance with demons, inhale the fear, let the quiet what-if whisper grow into a roar: What if it is all true? Why couldn’t it be? After all, This Is Halloween.

The Grey Lady

“Don’t go near the briars or the Grey Lady will get you. She makes people fall into the thorns, see something shiny there, reach in and suddenly the thorns move! Just to draw blood. She feeds off of it, you know.”

“You’re being silly, there’s no such thing as the Grey Lady, it’s just an old story. I read that it’s based on some poor woman fleeing a warband into the briars, getting stuck and- …well, dying. Of course people would spin a story about it, she’s hauuuunting the briars, looking for revenge!”

“Well, if you read about it then it’s definitely true! She lived here, she died here, wouldn’t you haunt the place after a death like that? I know I would! Uses her ripped off jewelry as bait, or maybe she’s just still searching for them…”

“Yeah, sure, maybe in a horror movie. Ghosts don’t exist, don’t be such a scaredy-cat. …ohey, look, there’s something shiny in there!”

Rotten Eternity

She was caught by the dark magic of the Hedge a long time ago, body dragged into the soil, trapped and wrapped in the thorny roots, soul slowly seeped into the orb with all the other prey the entity managed to catch in its greedy vines.

Rotting was surprisingly slow, almost subtle, the pulsing magic keeping the body operational. The other changes were more drastic: the claws, the horns, the bone structures growing out like thorns, like she herself was no more than a vine now.

If she still had had a mind of her own, she might have wondered if she would turn fully a part of the entity plant in time. Perhaps the staring eyes were all that was left from the earlier preys, now aware only enough to fulfill their observing function.

But no, there was no more wondering or thoughts: simply a function as slightly more independently moving part of the entity. The reaching, calling, tempting part of the extremely carnivorous plant.

Resting Place

Pulse’s Halloween games have been my favourites for years. They’re like horror movie experiences with gifts scattered about, some more hidden than others. In this year’s game you play the role of an assistant to a certain Dr. Krol in a clinic called Resting Place. It’s your first day and the patients are missing… time to solve the mystery! Read: time to get in serious brainbreaking trouble.

Most of the look is formed from the gifts found during the game, like the outfit by [ SAKIDE ], skin by Adore & Abhor, makeup by Pin Me Down, spider hair clip by A Netherworld and poses with knives by HopScotch. The Reema-hair by *Alice Project* is available in this month’s FAIR and I adore the attitude the bangs gives to it. The bangs, hair and the braid are all separate parts and can be tinted differently. I chose to turn them blood red to go with the suede boots by lassitude & ennui, available in Cinema’s Fantasy section.
