Flutterpaws, the Dreamlings of Whimsy

Flutterpaws are dreamlings of whimsy. They flutter and pad and nose their ways through dreams with either endless curiosity or excessive feline indifference. When they find a dreamscape they like, they gather as indeed a flutter of paws, one after another.

Fish or other flickering moving things are often favored, but any dreamscape of shiny surreal things is sure to draw their attention. They don’t make friends often, the flutterpaws, but they do love chasing after zig-zag patterns and making a point to ignore anything they don’t comprehend. 

The yoga frogs inhabiting this particular dreamscape have fortunately endless zen patience toward their quirkier dream-kin. Perhaps the next time this dream will feature less butterflies and flying fish for less feline interruptions and therefore more meditation opportunities.

Sometimes when the flutterpaws feel especially whimsical, they invite a dreamer to join them: transform and transport, all for the sake of momentary amusement and an extremely puzzled dreamer with a story to tell when they wake up.

The Glyph of the Bun

“I greet you, bunlings, and wish you warm eve. What has brought you out of the forest in such numbers, what might be so important that you ventured forth all the way to the Pool Between Worlds?” 

“We want to write things!”
“Yey things!”
“Many yey things!”
“To make surprises!”
“We can’t be cheerful in human sounds, strange loud human sounds.”
“But we want to yey. Happy yeys!”
“To be helpful.”
“And then we hop out of the surprise box and waaaaave flags. Yey-flags!”

“That is certainly a noble goal and nice of you, brave bunlings. To mark down human sounds you need some ink and paper, like so… and a brush to hold with paws, possibly mouth, maybe if you tilt your head… yes. I must say that is a remarkably well done pictogram, very clear in meaning, but perhaps also these signs… they are called letters. Add them for emphasis, hm?”

“‘s a bun glyph! It says ‘yey!'”

“Are you sure the dull lines say yey too?”
“They don’t look very yeysome.”
“Are you really really suuuure? Ohalright.”
“Now we’ll form a pyramid and then hop out and wave all the yeys!”

“Perfect. I’m sure your bravery and dedication will be noted and appreciated. Now hop back to the forest to practice, I think the pyramid could use some more work. Perhaps practice on a cushion, come to think of it. It’ll become the best of surprises.”

This just happened. Don’t ask me how. These things do that. Happen.

Dive Deeper

Dive deeper. It’s summer, it’s time to swim and play. Time to explore for the sake of exploration, to see new sights, try out new things, view visions never encountered before.

 Who says the water isn’t warm enough yet? The sunlight reaches all the way down during the summer nights and where it doesn’t reach, the magic of underwater growth lights the way.

Perhaps if you’re lucky enough in your watery visits you might pique an interest of someone ascending to visit you in return. Curiosity is a remarkable trait, goes both ways.

In the depths all the secrets are yours to find, all the mysteries within your reach. Dive deeper. It’s summer and anything can happen.

Just because I’ve wanted to make a mermaid post the whole spring and never had the time for it: now I did. Besides, frolicking in water is an inseparable part of summer. Code for Club

There’s this club, you see. A really shiny one. Shiny, but dark. Just the way I like it. I want to get in, but it’s early. Way too early. So what I did was called my friend who has certain… experience in adjusting robot protocols and gave him the bouncer’s code.

The bad news is that the bouncers are damn well coded. It took at least quarter of a unit before the ‘apologies citizen you are not authorized in this area please revolve and advance in another direction‘ litanies ceased.

But after that it was all smooth flying! My friend even snuck in a few codes for dancing! Not particularly bendy dancer, but very firm grip.

Psst, while I keep him distracted, all of you can come in and party any time you like!

The best part of this all is of course that the club is real and it’s really a club! Club Gothika’s Mobile Unit in Futurewave is fully functional, operational and such things and you can find their schedule when you scroll to the bottom of this post. Today (Monday) there’s both the builder and the organizer of the whole glowing glory playing for you one after the other!

Miss Flake and the Lost Little Bunling

“You see, Miss Flake, the last night’s snowfall was really rather heavy and we think you might have overdone yourself just a dash. Our young’un hopped out to play, but we lost sight of ‘im, because of the white fur and snow and all that, you understand. I said to Pinknose, I said to her, why don’t we talk to Miss Flake. She’s a sensible kind of snow fairy, she is. She’ll help us.”

“Of course I’ll help, Mr. Pokepaw. It is sort of my fault, after all. I danced slightly longer than I was supposed to, but it was just such a perfect weather for it and there was no breeze at all and all the crystals and I- …um. I mean, I’ll go and start searching right away, why won’t I.”

“Mr. Hoowing, any sign of- oh, still naptime. I’m sorry I woke you. Yes, have you seen a tiny white ball of fluff in the snow. Why are you looking at me like that? Oh fine, sure, go back to sleep, I’ll find him on my own!”

“Mr. Yapnose! That bun better still be- oh, but he is. All swaddled cosily, too. What, you were carrying him around with that for safety? No, I’m afraid you can’t keep him, his family is dreadfully worried. Come on then, give the bunny to me. No shifty looks or snarly mutterings!”

“Yesyes, he’s fine. The fox said he was too cute to kill, it’s a great thing you have going there. Now you keep an eye on him better and I’ll promise to dance lighter snowfalls from now on. No more flaking!”

Gothmas by Gaslight

Soon. In fact: tomorrow. There are two sims covered in snow, hosting a plethora of dark houses and glowing lights in the midst of the permanent night. Gothmas helpers are sneaking about as well as one can in boots that could kill, booths are getting filled with gifts worthy of Gothmas spirit and the gaslight lamp posts are lit to welcome visitors.

Gothmas celebrates the wonderfully monochromatic nature of blacks and whites, of pervasive darkness lit with lights like stars, the natural palette of all things goth.

Let us not forget the red so strongly associated with this time of year: it belongs to Gothmas as well, simply translated slightly differently. Perhaps translated in an older fashion of warm blood on the snow in the lasting dark, the hope of bringing back the sun. It makes as much sense as a jolly man in a red suit, after all.

Once Upon a Time…

…there was a small flight of dragonlings, the last five survivors of their kin. Their mother had bravely hidden them away before luring evil humans after her to save the dragonlings. Their big sister found them and brought them to safety to their aunt, who lived far away from others because she liked peace and quiet and… put that down. Right now.

Alright, where were we… ah. The said aunt promised to look after her small nephews and nieces while their big sister went to hunt for proper food and- Those are not healthy, especially not before dinner, stop- …oh, so you paw-stamped and licked them all already? Very well. Just this once.

The young dragonlings were completely unaware of the tragedy they had faced and played around recklessly without a pinch of gratitude, I might add, and would certainly soon catch the melting sickness from all those candles if they do not stop pretending to be deaf and get out of there right this moment.

In the end their aunt accepted that her sensitive silence-loving ears would never stop ringing for the next couple of centuries and- …where did the fifth one go? I swear when I find you little rascals-

Frost Flowers

They bloom only in the cold, in the frost that makes every inhale a shock to warm human bodies, every exhale a cloud in the air. They cover the black branches, they decorate every window, they blanket the evergreens, they turn every shape into a piece of art. They cover the white with sparkles, creating a world made out of diamonds.

What humans don’t usually know is that the said sparkles are all they can see from the frost flowers dancing. Around and around and around, spinning wildly of joy, more and more of their companions falling down to join them.

What they also don’t know — cannot see, cannot hear — are the ancient singing stones playing the melody for the dance. Wings flutter to the rhythm, feet never truly touch the ground, but leave frost sparks in their wake. The sway of the white hair creates a soft breeze that only playfully toussles the fallen snow.

Every sparkle is made out of the most precious substance winter creates: light. Every little starlet fallen on the ground holds the promise of more of it returning. Soon.

Sunny the Sorceress

“Disgrace to the family,” her father had said. Her mother had tried to be more supporting, but when Sunny’s lich-transformation gave her a deer-nose and adorable dapples, even she had given up. She had tried, oh how she had tried. She summoned bats and got flocked by chirpy birds. She brewed vile potions and ended up with ice cream. She tried to to conjure the chirpy birds into breathing fire and covered them in the said ice cream instead, much to their delight.

She left her dark cottage by the volcano before the roses and apple trees took over the briarthorn bushes and poison ivy patch and moved into a little tree house in the forest instead. She kept trying every now and then, hoping to clear her name and prove herself worthy of her ancient lineage, but even her robes turned from black to bright, sunny colours the moment she ceased focusing on them.

Somehow the skull-carved table soaked in blood turned into a console filled with comfy, happy-toned bedding. The carefully preserved ectoplasm barrel was suddenly apple cider. She took comfort in the fact that it was at least alcoholic. Mildly, but any ship in such storm.

By the time she found herself twirling instead of doing the well-practiced stalk-and-loom she decided it was the final straw. If she had to live in the sunlight with birdsong no matter what she did, she might as well start to enjoy it and brew another batch of ice cream.

Scales of Magma

Fire has always been both a blessing and a threat. It warms and it burns, it cooks meals and destroys buildings, it supports life and it steals it away. It’s no wonder all around the world we have imagined creatures that live within it, creatures that fire does not burn, creatures that swim in lava and always we have envisioned them fearsome.

Most of the fire-associated creatures are also always if not downright evil, at least scary. Dragons, demons, djinni, perhaps only the mysterious phoenix manages to escape to the general good side.

Who is to say what they really want, the fire creatures? Maybe even the salamander queen wants to simply bask in the heat like a common little lizard and wouldn’t spare one single thought on the nosy, noisy, flammable humans.

No better way to start a day than a warm dip in the lava, after all.
