I can’t help it, the critters always want to participate! So this year there’ll be two white bunnies with the golden tattoos in the contest. What contest, you might ask. Fallen God & Goddess Contest, of course! The Season of Whitecold

The few hours of warmer colours encourage frolicking in the snow, enjoying life in the downpour of glittering, fluttering stars. Just for those few moments before the approaching dark arrives. 

As the light wanes, darker creatures emerge from under the stairs, from the shadows, from the frozen spaces between the quick touches of sun.

They appear solid frozen as first, and you might have to glance at them from the corner of your eye to see them move at all, but as golden tones turn to blue, they are suddenly everywhere, skittering on the ice.

Cold cannot hurt them. They, and many other creatures of the night, indulge in the longdark, in the frost, in the starlight captured in small glints on the snow. It is their season, the season of whitecold.

The Waking Sun

The Sun sleeps through the winter, slumbering in the darkness, the cold keeping her brilliance at bay. The sparks dance around her in slow, near-frozen movements, carrying her through the long months of hibernation.

As the year changes to another, as the season shifts, the sparks come alive. They draw her forward, remind her of the cycle, of the returning spring. Each won moment of daylight gives her strength to shine bolder.

As the fires drive away the slowness of the cold, her focus returns. Every day she triumphs further in the skies, drawn in by her desire to warm up all the creatures she swore to nourish and protect.

The veils are breaking, daylight increasing, warmth wrapping the world in its embrace. Spark by spark, won hour by hour, summer approaches.

The Sun is returning.

The Sun of course begins her return long before our human-decided year-change, but the New Year is still a good moment to take a deep breath and appreciate the approaching spring and summer. Daylight wins more ground every day.

Waltz with Lost Spirits

It is the night of celebration, the night of festivities, the night of freedom. The doors are open, the portals calling, movement from one realm to another as easy as breathing: even for those who do not draw breath anymore.

The music twists within like a golden spiral of dance steps older than time. Left, right, across the border of reality into another, hop to next one, shapeshift, disguise, mold, become: dance.

It is the night when everything is normal and accepted and one can ride skeletal steeds through ballrooms, the night when one can waltz with lost spirits and indulge in the sensation of flesh once more.

It is the night when we all dance, we creatures of grey realms, celebrating the return of flesh and spirit once more. This is Halloween.

“What does it look like we do? Pick daisies? We make sure the bloody thing doesn’t blow up while you folks prance about in the fancy dances. ‘n it ain’t easy sometimes, let me tell you.”

“Ah. At least I am extremely grateful for that, let me assure you. But isn’t that dreadfully dangerous? Isn’t there some more… mechanical labor for such tasks?”

“Are you kidding me? Do you have any idea how much the Prototypes cost to create? They’re delicate machinations, the gearwork alone- …I mean, humans are always expendable, doesn’t cost much to make one of us, huh? Add a few implants for ocular accuracy and heat exhaustion and you have a new wrench hand.”

“…and how do you feel about that?”

“How do I feel about that? ‘m bloody- …oh, good day, Gazer, good day… grateful and happy to be able to keep us safe, naturally. What else?”

The Captain of the Gaze

“Captain Lupine, I’ve been told that you’re the one in charge of the Gaze, the local law enforcement unit. Is that correct?”

“Yes. You would be the recently arrived journalist, snooping around already.”

“Reporting, Captain. Reporting. Misinformation is a dreadful thing.”

“Granted. But so is rumor-mongering. You have five minutes. Speak.”

 “It seems to me that the Spiral is somewhat… distressed these days. In military fashion. What is going on?”

“That’s classified. The only thing you need to know is that the Gaze will keep all the law-abiding citizens of the Spiral safe.”

 “Ah. I couldn’t help but notice that little emphasis there. What about the …less law-abiding citizens?”

“There’s no such thing in the Spiral, Miss Journalist. No such thing. At least for long.”

 “…quite right, Captain. I see. However- …what’s that! The train is going off the rails, is there-“

“Your five minutes is up. You didn’t see a thing, citizen. If you did, you wish you hadn’t. Off you go, back to shopping, I have work to do.”

“My eyes! My old temporary blindness ailment has returned. Thank you for your time, Captain, I shall go now and write an article about um… knitting. Good day to you!”

The Violet Vision

Liberty of Mind

What would happen if you’d truly free your mind? Open up all the cages of preconception, pull back the dark coils of public opinion, release all the tentative ponderings free to fly.

Would they surprise you, your own thoughts, your own preferences and opinions? Would you like them, understand them, comprehend yourself better? Would you see eye to eye or struggle to accept yourself?

There is only one way to find out: lure them out from their hiding, remove the excuse covers you had piled up on them, break all the dimmed windows walling them in and let them fly free.

The Night Flight

There’s a feeling of depth in the sky when it darkens. It reaches down, covers the world, becomes a more tangible part of it. Gone is the illusion of distance, of the various shades dancing on the edges of blue covering the heights above us: during the night sky is all around us.

The night makes it all a part of the same in our mindscapes, closes all distances, brings everything within touch range. It hides the sharp lines of logic and reality from our eyes and lures out the other senses, invites imagination, becomes a sensation instead of a sight.

Enough so that if you look up to the calling depths around and above, you could almost believe that all it takes is letting go and diving upwards. For the sky is just another sea.

Sharp Edges

People have them. Life has them. We might learn to protect ourselves by wearing armor, by dodging, by keeping safe distance, but safety comes with the price of limitations in both motions and room to move in.

The spaces, the edges, the armors are very rarely physical. They are all in our heads, in our own limitations and comfort zones. Leaving them, daring the edges will get you easily cut. But perhaps you win more room to move in by learning exactly where the edge is. Perhaps the edges move in time and should be revisited.

And maybe, just maybe, once you learn where the sharp edges lie, you will learn how to wield and control them without hurting yourself.
