That’s the theme of this year’s Hair Fair Photo Contest. The rules are pretty flexible: only new pictures, hair can be any old thing or even self-made and the contest runs until June 30th. The Hair Fair itself will be in July, 14th to 29th.

I know it’s a cliche and an obvious association, but it’s such for a good reason. Flying is freedom, at least for me. Thus wings are the perfect symbol for it. I wanted a picture of flying, of long hair blowing in the wind and picked one of the Diva hairs from [ 69 ], probably not available anymore. There really should be much more editorial hairs on the grid, they’re wonderful for this kind of things.

Freedom is also about cutting ties and sailing wherever your imagination leads you. I originally wanted this one to be about cutting your hair — since sometimes it feels like I’m one of the few spokes-avatars for short hair on the grid — but what worked well as an idea looked like a beheading in the pictures. So symbolic pretty ribbon it is! The short hair is one of my favourite default ones from Waka & Yuki.

52 Colours: Pueblo

This week I didn’t even try to find the colour in my inventory. You all know that anything I have in brown is steampunk-related and I felt that I’ve taken that route for all the browns too often. So I went my other default brown way and made a faun. A modern faun, bored in the forest.

There’s nothing boring in the Misty Mountains, though, and I warmly recommend visiting. The city faun just looked very out of place there. I got her outfit from the current sale in Mimikri. The sweater had the right tone and was so outrageous and funny with the huge poofy sleeves that it passed the ‘meh-casuals’ attitude I tend to have and sailed right into ‘nifty twist’ territory.

The city faun gave me an excuse to grab the latest shiny by Mandala. I know you all have it, too, no point in denying. The delicate lady-like horns are by *~*Illusions*~* and the cutesy faun skin by Pink Fuel.

These hooves by [Gauze] are probably the prettiest ones I’ve seen in SL. Perfectly shaped, realistic, almost delicate for a faun girl to step with. The tufts of fluff add a cute touch to them. As for where the faun girl ended up? That’s Coyote with thematically appropriate pueblos, shopping and art gallery.

Skin: Pink Fuel – Basil <Cocoa> – Sweet Fawn – no nose | Eyes: Insufferable Dastard – Colors of Fall Brown | Lashes: Redgrave – 39 – Luscious | Hair: Waka & Yuki – Model Hair 14 Gift | Hairbase: Amacci – Hairbase Tattoo Black Coal | Horns: *~*Illusions*~* Cernwn Horns | Sweater: Mimikri – Piz Sweater Cumin | Skirt: Mimikri – Tahnee Suede Mini Black | Necklace: Mandala – Omochi Necklace Red | Hooves: [Gauze] – Faun Legs Naturals Black | Poses: D.Luxx – Secrets 03 / aDORKable Poses – 17 of 25 / aDORKable Poses – 8 of 25

TV Break

I’ve lately been just squinting at evil twisting cubes all over the grid while doing the Twisted Hunt, but I managed to tear myself away from the camming madness to blog today! Huzzah and such things! I’m not quite sure if this character is taking a break watching tv or breaking the tv itself, but either way: something completely different!

This is very far from Sonya’s usual style choices, but I rather like the end result. I somehow zebra-themed all over the place, even added a zebra skin to the projector! The animalistic corset by Somnia was admittedly the starting point and inspiration for all the stripes. Otherwise I tried to keep to grey side of monochrome with sort of grungy feel to the background.

I do have a soft spot for rocker jackets and so I absolutely had to get this python one by Mimikri from the Dressing Room Blue. Mockie’s zebra make-up fit the look perfectly and I added one of Somnia’s tattoos instead of a necklace. When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.

The skybox is by Spessart and it seemed to echo the Lassitude & Ennui boots — Jackal described these Wanderlust stompers with “steampunk or just plain punk, you decide” — and the skybox seems to work for either as well. This time I didn’t go with steampunk, though. Le gasp. Psst, you can get the boots from the March Mesh Madness at the moment. As for the TV? You can still get it from Collabor88 if you hurry!

March Mesh Madness: Boots: Lassitude & Ennui – Wanderlust Boots Black Duotone*

Various Ways to Fall

The Seasons Hunt has started again and it’s full of fun and fabulous fall! I really call the season autumn, but fall is so much more fun to pun with. (Well, really I call the season syksy, but that’s even more difficult to pun with!)

The more casual way to fall is of course having piles and piles of colourful maple leaves to play with! The tree, pumpkins and the poses within it all are from Glitterati. The awwtastic bird house is by Molto Bene. The hat & hair combo is by, the warm sweater dress is by AddiCt and the colourful leggings by Magic Nook. I used brown eyes by Insufferable Dastard for both pictures and for this picture accompanied them with cute acorn necklace by Concrete Flowers. All of this from the hunt. The bubbles-rings by .( bewildebeest ). are really one of my goes-with-everything favorites and I used one in both pictures, as well as anjum-earrings in the lower one. Much ❤ to Coyo, yes~

If playing outside is not your thing, you can fall inside, too. I confess: I’ve wanted that fur stole by Mimikri since last winter. When it hit Dressing Room Blue, I owned it pretty much immediately. Obviously I had to make a vintagey look for it so I used a dress by Ingenue with it. The nifty cinnabun-hair called Leila by Milk Motion was just the right amount of sophistication with just a touch of quirk. The dress and the hair are also from the Seasons Hunt, as well as the house by L2 Studio, seat with books by Vespertine and the hand warmer by TOSL that I set on the seat. (I love it, it looks like there’s a marsupilami hiding in it!) The tights by Le Poppycock and the patchwork boots by Lassitude & Ennui are not a part of the hunt, but definitely squeetastic and fall-fitting. Pose by Olive Juice and skin by League, as usual~

Oh, and absolutely randomly: no post-processing whatsoever on either. Hurray for SL sometimes working like intended!

52 Colours: Olive

I actually found several olive things in my inventory, some of them were even labeled olive! I find this surprising. Another surprising thing is that Miss Olive told me in no uncertain terms that she would be kicking some serious behind and would not be sitting pretty in a skybox. So, off to S.I.C49 we went!

Miss Olive is also the first of my colour-girls to get two pictures. She told me she needed two and I didn’t dare to object! The outfit is mostly by Mimikri, except for the velvet tanktop by Sn@tch, fishnet gloves by DV8 and torn fishnet tights by Sheer. The glaring green eyes and the eye make-up are by The Plastik. The fantastic armband with letter-change script nametag (three letters) is by Yabusaka. Skin is by League and lashes by Redgrave, as usual. Pose by Estetica.

Her hair with the headband and skulls is by Urban Assault. The facial piercings by Virtual Insanity are all linked into one item. The shorter necklace is by Loulou&Co and the longer by Little Pricks. Earrings are by Silver Wheel. The face stripes are by YaYo. All of these are old hunt items. Pose by Niqotine Poses.

There’s more windlight and other enhancement play than usual, but the environment just forced my hand! Nothing to do with Miss Olive glaring at me at all! <.<

The Evolution of Sonya

It’s Sonya’s rez day today! She logged onto the grid as a clueless newbie on April 19th, 2008. There’s been breaks from SL during that time — usually to give a new mmorpg a go — but somehow I always seem to return and find new things to squee about. Everything changes so fast and on the other hand, some things never do. Enough familiarity to return to, but enough novelty to intrigue.

I originally compiled these pictures for The Evolution of an Avatar thread in the SLUniverse Forums, but decided to wait with blogging them until now. They were so perfect for a rez day post.

This pretty much covers the first half a year, easily. The small top one on the left is the very first picture I took. Behold the noobness! I was roleplaying in a Vampire: the Requiem game at the time, so white skin was the obvious choice. When the game ended and I stuck around on the grid, I gradually shifted into an ooc-avatar with a human skin from the same maker (Bodies by Oh!).

I found Sky Everett and became addicted to the hairs. (The top right one is Curious Kitties, though.) I also found Evie’s Closet and added her fantasy outfits into my growing addiction list. I learned to use colours! Gothic colours, I admit, but colours nevertheless. This skin carried me from late 2008 to December 2009, after which I felt like I wanted to update it somehow…

Which I did when I found this skin by Djinn & Tonic. My SL style began mixing vintage and rock moments into the fantasy and goth. I also found bobs by various makers — Lamb’s top left and LOQ Hairs’ bottom left. LeeZu, Miamai and Aoharu got their shares of squees as well as Mandala, who continues to kill me with jewelgasms. The lotus chain bracelet combos are probably the most worn piece of jewelry I’ve worn, ever.

When the tattoo make-up layers became widely available, I began twitching about wanting a skin with less make-up. It took actually months of searching and eventually waiting before the skin I wanted was released. I bought League’s Sia almost precisely a month ago and it still astonishes me with its quality.

I thought that I’d wear more make-up with it even on daily basis, but instead I’m actually really happy with the fresher look. Combined with the bobs that are these days my favorite, it feels like Sonya has grown up.

Picture 1, Bodies by Oh! skin in white: (too long ago for proper credits, but let’s see what I remember) Hairs by Cake, Random and Gurl6 (top left, top right, bottom). Top right: ankh choker by Bastchild, stockings by LaPointe, hand jewelry Celtic Myst, no idea of the rest. Bottom: fur shawl thing by Crave, ankle pearls by Bonita’s and the couch by Relic! …yeah, no idea of the rest.

Picture 2, Bodies by Oh! skin in human pale: Top left: dress by Mimikri, gloves by Atsuki Kayo, pearls by Ztique, rose hat by G Field. Top right: dress & gloves by Discord, jewelry by Perturb/ation. Bottom left: outfit by Cynful. Bottom right: dress by Evie’s Closet, boots by J’s. All the hairs are by Sky Everett except the top right from Curious Kitties.

Picture 3, Djinn & Tonic skin: Top left: hair by Lamb, dress by Miamai, jewelry by Mandala. Top right: hair by Sky Everett, dress by Rotten Toe. Bottom left: hair by LOQ, roses by Sn@tch, fur coat by Aoharu. Bottom right: hair by Sky Everett, jacket & tights by LeeZu, mini skirt by League, hand jewelry by Mandala.

Picture 4, League skin: Hair by Waka & Yuki, eyes by Poetic Colors, dress by Miamai, hand jewelry by Mandala, butterflies with the pose by Lauria, orient express skybox by Blue Sky.

52 Colours: Ecru

Ecru — what a strange sounding word. For some reason it doesn’t sound like this vintagey respectable shade of tan. Darker than beige, lighter than brown. I stared at the sample at 52 Weeks of Color Challenge and had two visions. One, a vintage pencil skirt suit. Two, a safari outfit. Despite a friend’s request to combine both, I didn’t go hunting for a vintage safari outfit, although I did buy something just for the colour challenge. First time so far! Although I have a feeling that these light, soft colours will be problematic for me. I tremble in fear just thinking of pastels.

Miss Ecru has packed her bags — even the one with a steampunk propeller — and poured herself a glass of champagne for bon voyage, and is ready to go! Where will she go? Who knows~ Perhaps she’s off to Paris for delightful dallying, perhaps to London for the latest scandalous season in high society, perhaps to Madrid to laze underneath a parasol and fan herself in the heat… the destination does not matter, it’s all about the moment of departure.

Skin by Mango Mango!, eyes by Poetic Colors, hair by Waka & Yuki, lashes by Imabee and additional make-up underneath the veil by Mynerva. Jacket and gloves by Miamai, shirt by Sn@tch and the skirt by Mimikri. The skirt is the one thing I purchased, I couldn’t resist the sale in Mimikri. It ends on March 7th, so if you haven’t checked it out yet you better hurry! The adorable little house is by Zacca, the small purse-size mini trunks on the window sill by Sey, the champagne by Waverly Kline, suitcase by Oblonski, the steampunk shopping helpers by The Brass Needle and pose by POSEbility.
