An Unexpected Party

Today is the day. Today we celebrate one of our founders, a true visionary whose imagination shaped ours, whose dreams turned to life in vivid colours and sounds and emotions. 

Today we will hold a party in his honor, a tribute, a feast: a completely Unexpected Party, even! There will be food involved, and music, and fireworks.

Today we gather to celebrate Middle Earth in the closest realm we have to the Shire. Won’t you join the celebration?

The Light of the New Year

It’s a sunrise in the horizon of the Long Dark. It promises fresh snow, new winds, paths never walked before. It tells you all the dark things on your journey will be left behind, that they cannot cross over to this side. It lies. We carry the light with us, just like we carry the dark, and it is up to us to let them go or keep them close, it is up to us to choose. Regardless, in the light of the first new day of our lives it is always easier to be resolute, always easier to believe we will choose well. Perhaps that is the whole meaning of it, to give us that boost of energy to continue trying our best to make good choices, to encourage others to do so, to share our light with each other. 

Here’s to the new year, new world, shared light! May we make it the best of the years yet.

The Mittens Visit Wizard Whiskers

“Is this the right path to the wizard?” The voice was soft and curious and only a little bit nervous.

“Yas,” another voice responded. “Lookit, a lantern guardian bun, just like Madame Miu said.”

“Please help us, o Mighty Wizard Whiskers. Flufftail has been turned into a hooman!”

“She’s now all mute, makes just weird gibberish sounds ‘n tries to walk on her hindpaws all the time.”

“She’s even started wearing other animals’ skins on herself! It’s so gruesome that we don’t know what to do!”

Wizard Whiskers did not say a word, simply nodded slowly and glowing strands of sparkles picked the hooman up to twirl her in the air until all the Mittens could see was glittering lights. Then they heard a soft thump as something considerably smaller and fluffier landed on her four white paws.

“‘n that’s how we got our sister back and learned not to play with cursed red ribbons. Not even when they have wiggly tinkly bells attached.”

Borrowed Mane in the Summer Rain

After hearing about Wigs for Kids, Bunling That Knows Letters wanted to show that one can look simply fabulous by using a borrowed mane — even if the summer rain gets it in your eyes.

The Secrets of Fae Magic

Unicorn Knights, the Protectors of the Fairelands

It is a sacred duty to protect the Fairelands, one that all the Unicorn Knights share. For this purpose they are given the Armor of Resilience, the Shield of Strength and the Sword of Hope. In the Fairelands the Darkness has visible forms, ones that a skilled knight may defeat should her belief in her cause and her trust in her companions be strong enough.

The unicorns travel with them, not as war mounts, but as friends. Their magic aids the knights, reminding them that even in the parts of the Fairelands where all hope seems lost one can find it from within. From the support of others, friends, family, community. Their journey is long, their service neverending, but they would not want it any other way. They keep the Darkness at bay and hope alive, day after day.

Fantasy Faire is open! The portals to the Fairelands have emerged and will bring you through the mists for eleven days before they vanish again. Journey to the Fairelands Junction and acquire a handy teleport HUD from there, or simply travel through all 14 worlds: they form a circle continent.

Flutterpaws, the Dreamlings of Whimsy

Flutterpaws are dreamlings of whimsy. They flutter and pad and nose their ways through dreams with either endless curiosity or excessive feline indifference. When they find a dreamscape they like, they gather as indeed a flutter of paws, one after another.

Fish or other flickering moving things are often favored, but any dreamscape of shiny surreal things is sure to draw their attention. They don’t make friends often, the flutterpaws, but they do love chasing after zig-zag patterns and making a point to ignore anything they don’t comprehend. 

The yoga frogs inhabiting this particular dreamscape have fortunately endless zen patience toward their quirkier dream-kin. Perhaps the next time this dream will feature less butterflies and flying fish for less feline interruptions and therefore more meditation opportunities.

Sometimes when the flutterpaws feel especially whimsical, they invite a dreamer to join them: transform and transport, all for the sake of momentary amusement and an extremely puzzled dreamer with a story to tell when they wake up.

The Season of Whitecold

The few hours of warmer colours encourage frolicking in the snow, enjoying life in the downpour of glittering, fluttering stars. Just for those few moments before the approaching dark arrives. 

As the light wanes, darker creatures emerge from under the stairs, from the shadows, from the frozen spaces between the quick touches of sun.

They appear solid frozen as first, and you might have to glance at them from the corner of your eye to see them move at all, but as golden tones turn to blue, they are suddenly everywhere, skittering on the ice.

Cold cannot hurt them. They, and many other creatures of the night, indulge in the longdark, in the frost, in the starlight captured in small glints on the snow. It is their season, the season of whitecold.

The Waking Sun

The Sun sleeps through the winter, slumbering in the darkness, the cold keeping her brilliance at bay. The sparks dance around her in slow, near-frozen movements, carrying her through the long months of hibernation.

As the year changes to another, as the season shifts, the sparks come alive. They draw her forward, remind her of the cycle, of the returning spring. Each won moment of daylight gives her strength to shine bolder.

As the fires drive away the slowness of the cold, her focus returns. Every day she triumphs further in the skies, drawn in by her desire to warm up all the creatures she swore to nourish and protect.

The veils are breaking, daylight increasing, warmth wrapping the world in its embrace. Spark by spark, won hour by hour, summer approaches.

The Sun is returning.

The Sun of course begins her return long before our human-decided year-change, but the New Year is still a good moment to take a deep breath and appreciate the approaching spring and summer. Daylight wins more ground every day.

Waltz with Lost Spirits

It is the night of celebration, the night of festivities, the night of freedom. The doors are open, the portals calling, movement from one realm to another as easy as breathing: even for those who do not draw breath anymore.

The music twists within like a golden spiral of dance steps older than time. Left, right, across the border of reality into another, hop to next one, shapeshift, disguise, mold, become: dance.

It is the night when everything is normal and accepted and one can ride skeletal steeds through ballrooms, the night when one can waltz with lost spirits and indulge in the sensation of flesh once more.

It is the night when we all dance, we creatures of grey realms, celebrating the return of flesh and spirit once more. This is Halloween.
