The Alchemist

It’s all about secrets. Secrets and uncovering them. Truths beyond the known and mundane. Most of all it’s about the burning curiosity to learn, to see, to understand. Often also about the power that the knowledge brings, no matter which face the power wields: security, wealth, control, ambition, longevity, life.

There are books, tomes, legends of old to form the first steps: to detail what others before you have learned. It is faster than trying to do every basic process yourself, leaning on the curiosity and wisdom of others for the groundwork.

But in the end the book-knowledge will reach its limits and the only way forward is to experiment further yourself. Find and map new ways, test and define, draw new parameters after every failure until you can pinpoint the exact method for success.

Like here: developing the most soothing bath system for mermaids and their cephalopodian friends. Just a touch more sea salt and a little pinch of powdered coral and it’s ideal.

Titania’s Call

Trapped on a distant shore, banished to another plane, lost in a world alien to her, she calls. Who knows why she is there, what her crimes were, if she is innocent to any except her very existence, if she used her powers for her own gain and was caught or if the ruler of her own plane changed and she fell out of favour.

The delicate bracelets grow and wrap and pulse around her wrists, keep her from casting a portal home, imprison her to the spot, immortal life turned into a punishment of watching the blood red skies and calling, always calling.

All she has left is hope and time. Neverending supply of one, desperate surge of the other. Her eternal red dusks are spent in weaving plans. There is nothing else to do: weave and keep calling. Never stop calling.

The Courtier Game

The life of a courtier can be surprisingly challenging. Instead of having to worry about food, shelter or material concerns you’re stuck as a pawn on a chessboard that no one really even truly plays, although many hold the delusion they do. The game simply happens.

When it comes to the women of any historically traditional court — or even the majority of the imagined ones — there are several approaches to the game one can take. One can be fully a pawn, but make sure one’s value is high enough for the others to keep protecting you. One can also use it as a cover while actually having more in-depth plans under the oblivious-but-valuable cover.

One can be openly pragmatic, sharp and widely acknowledged as a player in the game, as someone you want on your side or someone to be concerned about. The power and reputation can form alliances and gain one respect, but it can also drive one very very down if anyone with more perceived power should become annoyed.

For most of the time it is very good to be the queen, indeed. The most power on the board, the most control and yet also the most wanted position and therefore the most luring target. Once in the position one cannot afford one single lapse of judgment or the game is over. For that particular piece.

Colours on Menu

Tasty, tasty colours. In a world where the colours are nourishment food is consumed through sight: the brighter the colours, the sweeter the experience. The Big Bad Bun definitely thinks so! Only the brightest, happiest meals for him!

This particular restaurant has delivery butterflies as waiters to maximize the tastes. The rainbow-dressed woman is not a part of the staff, she’s a minion. The very best colour-hunter the Big Bad Bun employs.

No pale pastels would survive her jewel tones and if she encounters anything especially dull, she might just have to dig up the neon gun.

Rainbows and eyecandy can be serious business.

The Butterfly Dance

It is what they do: dance. They flitter in the air, carried by the tiniest breezes, practically weightless, just a shape of bright colours in the corner of your eye.

Once in more solid humanoid form, they still dance. They still feel drawn to colours, flowers and growth. They still greet the sun like it was the main source of nourishment instead of the sweet nectar.

They still live in the now of the current ray of light, the warmth, the sights, the tastes, the movement. Every dance could be the last, so they never cease embracing the sun.

Unicorns and Rainbows

Not quite pink nor fluffy and not exactly dancing, but close enough! I also have my doubts on whether this particular unicorn will dance, frolic or prance. Seems like there’s a touch of a night mare in her eyes instead of mindless happiness.

But frolicking or not, rainbows are where the unicorns graze, correct? If not graze, maybe at least lounge. Laze. Stretch and roll around in the clouds indulgently while watching down.

Perhaps even step through to other realms to cause mischief help innocents. That is what they do, right? If you’re not an innocent, you might as well be a walking target practice. Unicorns have high standards, after all!

The Power of Words

The temptation to bring forth creatures from other realms with the power of words, the call of unknown, the intoxicating surge of power, the feel of complete control in your hands…

Or perhaps it is not a summoning, but transformation. Four guests arrived for dinner, but no one saw them leave. The remarkably exotic and strange menagerie of the marquessa did grow overnight, though…

The power of words can also be in the lack of them. The lack of accusations, judgment, proof. No words, no problems. If an extraordinarily large amount of locals have suffered tragic (interplanar) travel accidents or decided to settle down into a simpler existence (in kennels), surely no one can point a finger at the richest woman in the march.

Besides, a simple life consisting of carrots or chasing fireflies solved all those pesky little problems they were complaining about. They should be grateful, truly.

Crystal Lotus

In the myths of a world with a violet sun there’s a story of the spirit of the crystal lotus. Not unlike the myths of dryads in our world, she’s the essence of these plants taken humanoid form.

They say one can catch a glimpse of her during the dark dawns, when the lotus flowers tilt their heads toward the sun and the long cycle of the five moons is over. They say she is so imbued by the moons that the sudden dawn brings her forth into the humanoid shape, wading in the crystaline waters until the first proper ray of light.

There are stories saying that the humanoid form is an attempt to communicate with the ones she mimics. There are old legends of heroes gaining ancient wisdom from her, but even more stories of others trying to capture her.

Perhaps that is why the sightings of the crystal lotus have become so rare that her whole existence has become a myth. A legend of reaching for a woman and finding yourself holding only a flower.

Red Reaper

Almost a superhero name. Or a villain. Depends on which side of the glaive you look at it. This particular reaper might have red-toned skin, sharp horns and armor fitting for any evil overlord’s guard, but maybe she’s changed her ways. Maybe she’s fighting both the preconceptions against demons and the evil overlord?

When you stop laughing and/or rolling your eyes I must admit that she does make an excellent member of the said evil overlord army. I’d imagine her and her company are sent out to finish the jobs the regular army doesn’t get done. Or possibly the job of pruning and punishing the army itself when they screw up. They will screw up, you know the evil overlord’s army always does.

On the bonus side: at least they’ll die looking at something pretty.

Sea Sorceress

Does she summon storms or calm tsunamis? Do you feel dubious when watching her on the platform temple raised from the sea, casting her spells? Do you sigh of relief when someone makes sure the waves won’t swallow the island whole?

The truth is in the eye of the beholder, at least until it’s too late. One chance to either interrupt her casting or let her complete it. When it’s over there’s no turning back.

Is your first instinct to trust or doubt? Are you prone to act first, think later? Will the destruction be on your head, no matter if you acted or not, simply based on if you trusted or not?

The world is how we see it: how many sea sorceresses do you judge and interrupt daily, how many do you trust and thank? It’s all a matter of perception.
