Scales of Magma

Fire has always been both a blessing and a threat. It warms and it burns, it cooks meals and destroys buildings, it supports life and it steals it away. It’s no wonder all around the world we have imagined creatures that live within it, creatures that fire does not burn, creatures that swim in lava and always we have envisioned them fearsome.

Most of the fire-associated creatures are also always if not downright evil, at least scary. Dragons, demons, djinni, perhaps only the mysterious phoenix manages to escape to the general good side.

Who is to say what they really want, the fire creatures? Maybe even the salamander queen wants to simply bask in the heat like a common little lizard and wouldn’t spare one single thought on the nosy, noisy, flammable humans.

No better way to start a day than a warm dip in the lava, after all.

The Wiglet Piglets

Remember the Hatter Otters? They’re not the only criminal gang after headwear out there, you know. Meet the Wiglet Piglets! As the name implies, they hunt for wigs. No one truly understands why since they are clearly rather inept at adjusting them on their heads, what with the hooves and all, but who needs sense when you can have wigs?

No one knows that the actual mastermind behind the wig-yoinking crime waves is an android mannequin, obviously compensating for her lack of legs by her lust for big wigs. The bigger the better! The piglets are simply a bacony smoke screen.

Since legs are rather a delicate subject around Miss Mannequin, the piglets are forced to sit in cups when presenting their latest trophies. Despite their complete misunderstanding on how wigs work or what they are even for, let alone how to adjust them to look as good as they would on humans, they seem to have grown fond of them.

Which of course makes Miss Mannequin very, very dubious…

I present my humblest apology to Zibska for giving her hairdo-pearls to the swine, literally, but the rhyme was irresistible! I also want to emphasize that yegads, that is not how the hairstyles look on humans. They are piglets. What do you expect? It’s a surprise they’re even somewhat in the correct area!

Delirium

“Movies inspire me.” That is this year’s theme for the annual Hair Fair Photo Contest. Obviously I had to go for sci-fi, not only because it’s one of my favourite themes in general, but because crazy big sci-fi hairs in SL have always made me throw lindens at the designer in a blink of an eye.

The contest ends June 28th, so there’s still time to figure out your favourite movie hairstyles and to have fun with pictures before that. Hair Fair itself begins July 13th, so there’s still a long time to wait. More details on the contest can be found here.

As for the blue sci-fi hairstyle itself, it’s Delirium by Alice Project. Alice has a big summer sale going on until June 27th and has just released Create Your Own packs, which allow you to mix-match hair colours from all her HUDs ever, but only five different copies of the hair. This is great if you normally use just few colour-combinations, but if you want to be able to change your hair colour often, the Infinity packs are still the way to go. Alice’s HUD system has saved my blogger-behind on countless days of ‘but I need this green hair in slightly darker hue and with golden highlights’, so I wanted to give kudos and praise where it’s due when speaking of upcoming Hair Fair.

The Night Flight

There’s a feeling of depth in the sky when it darkens. It reaches down, covers the world, becomes a more tangible part of it. Gone is the illusion of distance, of the various shades dancing on the edges of blue covering the heights above us: during the night sky is all around us.

The night makes it all a part of the same in our mindscapes, closes all distances, brings everything within touch range. It hides the sharp lines of logic and reality from our eyes and lures out the other senses, invites imagination, becomes a sensation instead of a sight.

Enough so that if you look up to the calling depths around and above, you could almost believe that all it takes is letting go and diving upwards. For the sky is just another sea.

Get Your Goth On in Gothika!

Today is World Goth Day! This means that Club Gothika in World Goth Fair will be having a party of fourteen hours. Yes, fourteen. Seven DJs, seven different gothic themes, ridiculous amount of prizes with the winner takes it all principle and all around gothic entertainment.

I’ll be hosting the Best in Vampire party at 2-4pm SLT for DJ Acerose Razor and decided I liked my hostess look so much that I’d blog it. The ruins behind me are where the party will occur, right in the middle of the WGF Cursed. The first shift starts at 10am SLT and the party eventually stops fourteen hours later at midnight SLT. Back to Nature

Who knows where the evolution will take us? Who knows where it might have taken other civilizations elsewhere, merging and combining with their surroundings instead of taking control over them with tools.

Perhaps there can be a symbiosis between humanoid life and flora, if nowhere else than in our imaginations. Sinking in limb-like roots that allow moving about, skin absorbing alien lights, humanoid hands kept for their usefulness, hearing becoming less vital when the senses are attuned to pollen and pheromones…

I have always enjoyed such moments of trying to envision how life would look like through the eyes of something so alien that their priorities and needs in life differ completely from human. It gives perspective.

Almost all of the alien plant can be acquired from the new round of Genre that focuses on scifi. The skin by Jalwa is not actually green, I just played with windlights. The tentacle outfit by The Stringer Mausoleum went perfectly together with the mask and ear pieces by Spyralle, hair is by Analog Dog and the Biologic Evolution body tattoo by Fallen Gods Inc. completes the look.

Black and White

Sometimes they are both red. Every story has at least two sides to it and often one is painted black, the other white. Fairytales do this, many books and movies do this, presenting the side that the main character is not on in simplistic unlikeable hues. One can always recognize a more realistic story from having more than two sides, none of them truly evil or good, but with more developed agendas of their own.

Despite all this we all enjoy a story with clear cut division. We were raised on fairytales, with heroes and villains, with arch-enemies worth an epic struggle. There are many such pairings in fantasy, but one of the more popular ones in recent years has been vampires and werewolves. Both traditionally evil, simply different viewpoints to their supernatural existences. Vampires tend to at least pretend to be urban, civilized, cultured and decadent. Werewolves are seen to represent nature, uncontrolled passions, rage and brutality.  Maybe that is why they have been so popular lately: a step away from black and white, both dancing in their own shades of grey, always ready to be covered in red.

Moonlight in the Jungle

Surreal, vivid, alien. Both the horned female covered in intricate scales and the jungle surrounding her. Even the moonlight dancing on her bare skin seems out of this world, tinting her in camouflaging tones.

Perhaps the atmosphere in this world dyes the moonlight different, stronger. Perhaps the plants themselves soak it up and reflect it on the passing creatures. Whatever the reason, this night does not hide anything in the shadows, but reveals, basks and delights in a feast of colours.

Forest Dragon

Not all dragons are roaring flames and burninating the countryside (sorry, I could not help myself). Nor are they dark menace made out of greed and tyranny. Some of them are protective, nourishing forces of nature.

Forest dragons must prefer shapechanging for practical reasons, not much left of the forest if you stomp through them as a dragon. It is also easier to aid other creatures when they are not expecting you to snack on them any given moment.

If you lack the ability to shapechange or help with magic, there is an excellent opportunity to do so with a much more mundane means: money. Isle of Wyrms is holding a spring festival that will benefit St. Tiggywinkes Animal Hospital in the UK. You can find many a wondrous thing on their marketplace, for example this Draco Laguna skin by Fallen Gods Inc.
