The Gods of Sand, Stone and Gold

There is a place within the Fairelands made out of sand, stone and gold. It glows under the blazing sun, lazy breeze bringing in scents from the desert.

Sand swirls in patterns against the columns, an embrace of hot air surrounding the ancient stone, brushing against the hieroglyphs as to write its own story.

Gods form out of the heat: gods of black marble and gold, gods of desert and river, gods of life and death. They stand guard against the disruptions of time, their stone shapes wrapped in eternity.

There is a place within the Fairelands called The Golden Delta. Won’t you come over and visit?

The Golden Dawn

It has arrived again, the change of number, the resolutions and promises, decisions and devotions. For a moment everything seems new and fresh, full of possibilities. The new golden dawn of unknown.

There’s no knowing what it’ll be filled with, what it’ll entail, what joys or sorrows. No knowing, just plenty of wishes, hopes and plans. For this one moment everything seems possible. This year we’ll climb over all the obstacles to plant our flags on that One Achievement we all dream of: happiness. The decision makes us feel good, makes us stronger, the realization everything is possible, always, still possible.

The one thing we miss in this grand scene is the simple truth that every dawn is a new one. Every day ready to be a font of happiness, rich of joy and fulfillment. Once we manage that, once the delight of decisions fills us every day, then our dawns will truly be golden and covered with genuine riches of the heart.

The Dragon Nest

The rumor was true: the elder frost dragon had managed to lay her last eggs before luring the hunters to a merry chase that drew them far away from the nest, a chase that ended with her life.

The nest was a haphazard arrangement, the surroundings not even properly frosted over yet: she had been in a hurry. Some of the growth nearby was still green, the ground only iced over, no sign of a freezing blizzard or intricate icicle formations.

The eggs glowed of stubborn, magical life, fragile as any beginning. Easy prey for a dragon hunter. Fortunately they will never share mother’s fate, not if I have anything to say about it.

“Come, little siblings. I will take you to desolate hunting grounds, far away from the humans until you learn the disguise and can pass off as them. Then we will return to completely different hunting grounds, my little brothers and sisters. Completely different ones.”

The Blue Lady of Gentle Waves

Dream Guardians come in many shapes and forms, sizes and temperaments. The Blue Lady has carried many names in many cultures, times and places: Soft Singer. Hazebringer. Sway of Serenity. Calm Caller. The Sailor of the Gentle Waves.

She is the one you call when you sing a lullaby, the one you hope will come to you when you take a deep breath and wish to find peace in your dreams. Her presence soothes all the daily worries, lets them fade into the blue haze, lets your mind drift freely and rest calmly.

She will sail on the river of dreams for as long as you are with her: always sailing for the destination is not of importance, only the gently rocking motion of the boat and the lullaby of lapping waves.

No nightmare dares to approach her. They know that near her even they would lose their power and drift to peaceful sleep at her feet, too content to remember the horrors they had conjured up. So she sails with her peaceful passengers that come and go as they reach for her in their dreams and fade back to the waking world well-rested: sails and smiles.

What If?

It is the night for dark secrets, mysteries and myths. It is time for imagination to dwell in all the frightful spots at the back of your head, indulge in the startles, channel your mundane concerns into the fear of unknown and improbable, with that faint little voice within asking ‘what if?’ 

It is time for delicious treats, delicious thoughts. Make your fears tangible, taste them on the tip of your tongue, reach for more, find ways to combat them by becoming one yourself.

Take comfort in the knowledge that soon the visitation will be over and everything will be back to safe normalcy: all the monsters will be back under your bed or in your closet, haunting you only in the moments of your weakness.

But for now, tonight: dance with demons, inhale the fear, let the quiet what-if whisper grow into a roar: What if it is all true? Why couldn’t it be? After all, This Is Halloween.

Ned the Newt and Hoo-Wo-Man

“I remember when Uncle Flip went missing,” the wise old toad croaked. The newts called him simply All-Seer because surely when one missed eyes it meant they saw more and better than others. “Soon after that the chocolate frog appeared. Coincidence? I think not! Boys, if you do not save your Cousin Fred from the Jar, he’s going to end up chocolate as well. Then chomp! She’ll bite the head right off.”

So it was that the bravest of them all, the young Ned the Newt wiggled his way up the fireplace, freezing in fear only when the spellcasting terror known only as the Hoo-Wo-Man glanced away from the mysterious object she held. Cousin Fred was frantically nudging with his tail toward the true horror: the chocolate frog that surely had to be the missing Uncle Flip!

Ned the Newt squirmed between the Jar and the fireplace, waiting for the moment when the mysterious object flew away from the Hoo-Wo-Man so she had to flail to catch it again and look away. Then he pushed with his tail and huzzah! the jar was falling. But the Hoo-Wo-Man was already turning, noticing the movement. Ned lunged after the jar, no time for careful descent!

Landing on the floor was a painful, dizzy experience, but the Jar didn’t break — who knows what kind of materials it’s made of, terrible prison! The Hoo-Wo-Man was approaching already, but Cousin Fred was free! The newts scuttled back into the shadows as fast as they could, losing only Ned’s tail that he bravely left as a decoy to guarantee the safe retreat.

Behind them they could hear the mysterious gibberish voice of the Hoo-Wo-Man: “…well, guess no newt familiar then. Maybe something cuddlier.”

The Grey Lady

“Don’t go near the briars or the Grey Lady will get you. She makes people fall into the thorns, see something shiny there, reach in and suddenly the thorns move! Just to draw blood. She feeds off of it, you know.”

“You’re being silly, there’s no such thing as the Grey Lady, it’s just an old story. I read that it’s based on some poor woman fleeing a warband into the briars, getting stuck and- …well, dying. Of course people would spin a story about it, she’s hauuuunting the briars, looking for revenge!”

“Well, if you read about it then it’s definitely true! She lived here, she died here, wouldn’t you haunt the place after a death like that? I know I would! Uses her ripped off jewelry as bait, or maybe she’s just still searching for them…”

“Yeah, sure, maybe in a horror movie. Ghosts don’t exist, don’t be such a scaredy-cat. …ohey, look, there’s something shiny in there!”

The Black Knight

She’s the Guardian of the Mysteries. The final confrontation on a quest, the Keeper of the Grail — literal or symbolic. It is up to her to test your strength, determination and worthiness.

Admittedly most of the time her life is simply waiting: heroes don’t grow in trees. Most of them give up on the quest before the final stage or get stomped by the earlier phases involving dragons and minotaurs.

It does give her plenty of time to come up with tests, though. Puzzles, quizes, combat moves. Moral tests, trick questions, surprise endings. Waiting around for the right hero for a few millennia does make one rather miffed at the job and very willing to plot for payback, after all.

All she wants is some company that does not invite to be beaten and tossed into the whirlpool!

Bonus to Stun

It’s what drow (and elven in general) armors have always been based on: less the actual protection, more the stun effect of the opposite gender staring and gaping with their mouths open, making them easy kills.

Therefore bright colours, daring cuts, form enhancing designs and silky fabrics have always been on top of the armory list. The illusion of armor can be achieved by adding pieces of beautifully smithed metal into areas that do not cover anything strategically sexual, like shoulders and arms.

The more serious soldiers might even pass the traditional stiletto heels and wear pragmatic stompers instead, but only if they are sufficiently gorgeously crafted. Balancing the look with enough eyecatchers slightly higher will guarantee the successful stun effect.

The necklace by [The Forge] that the drow is using as an improvised headband/crown can be won in Fantasy Gacha Carnival. Despite astonishing match I must put an extra disclaimer on the system layers and the coat tails: the outfit is by Bare@Rose, one of my old favourites. It simply worked so perfectly with the armor bits that I had to combine the two.

Sea Sorceress

Does she summon storms or calm tsunamis? Do you feel dubious when watching her on the platform temple raised from the sea, casting her spells? Do you sigh of relief when someone makes sure the waves won’t swallow the island whole?

The truth is in the eye of the beholder, at least until it’s too late. One chance to either interrupt her casting or let her complete it. When it’s over there’s no turning back.

Is your first instinct to trust or doubt? Are you prone to act first, think later? Will the destruction be on your head, no matter if you acted or not, simply based on if you trusted or not?

The world is how we see it: how many sea sorceresses do you judge and interrupt daily, how many do you trust and thank? It’s all a matter of perception.
